Fundamental Nomic Vagueness

چکیده
If there are fundamental laws of nature, can they fail to be exact? In this paper, I consider the possibility that some vague. call phenomenon nomic vagueness. characterize vagueness as existence borderline lawful worlds and presence several other accompanying features. Under certain assumptions, such prevents physical theory from being completely expressible in mathematical language. Moreover, suggest regarded world. For a case study, we turn Past Hypothesis, postulate (partially) explains direction time our We have reasons take it seriously candidate law nature. Yet is vague: admits (nomologically) possible worlds. An exact version would lead an untraceable arbitrariness absent any laws. However, dilemma between dissolved new quantum time’s arrow.

Nomic-Role Nonreductionsim: Identifying Properties by Total Nomic Roles
I introduce “nomic-role nonreductionism” as an alternative to causal-role functionalism in the philosophy of mind. It is inspired by recent trends in cognitive science that emphasize embodied cognition and multi-level methods of explanation in the special sciences. While causal-role functionalists identify mental properties by an intra-level transition theory that describes relations between in...
متن کاملSpatial Vagueness and Second-Order Vagueness
This paper presents a geometric characterization of geographic objects with vague boundaries. Since the framework is based on ordering geometry and does not rely on numerical concepts, it can be applied to qualitative spatial reasoning. The characterization describes vague regions and gradual transitions between two vague regions. This approach takes into account that the region of all points t...

متن کاملIntentional Vagueness ∗
This paper analyzes communication with a language that is vague in the sense that identical messages do not always result in identical interpretations. It is shown that strategic agents frequently add to this vagueness by being intentionally vague, i.e. they deliberately choose less precise messages than they have to among the ones available to them in equilibrium. Having to communicate with a ...
متن کاملCompenzational Vagueness
Some manipulations with vague quantities consist in an aggregation of vague amounts where the resulting aggregated quantity (in our case a sum of vague summands) is expected to be (almost) crisp. The aim of this contribution is to analyze and briefly discuss various approaches to this problem which can be supported by the elementary theory of fuzzy quantities. The analysis is focused on the pos...
